Some reactions take in energy and some release energy. Why? And what are some common examples of each type of reaction?
- An energy change occurs when reactions take place.
- Exothermic reactions release heat.
- Endothermic reactions absorb heat.
- Breaking bonds takes in energy and making bonds releases energy.
When any chemical reaction takes place, a change in energy occurs.
Reactions that give out energy are termed exothermic – the reactants have more energy than the products, and so excess energy is released as heat.
