There are more than 600 muscles in the human body. One of the main types is skeletal muscles which hold your skeleton in position and help you to move.
- Skeletal muscles consist of elongated, rod-shaped cells, known as muscle fibers.
- Muscle fibers contain thousands of protein filaments called myofibrils.
- The myofibrils slide against one another when the muscle contracts, causing movement.
- Muscles can only pull and are arranged in pairs, working together to allow all type of movement.
